Comparative analysis of the national biosafety regulatory systems in East Africa AgEcon
Jaffe, Gregory.
This paper analyzes the current and proposed biosafety systems in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda using a set of components and characteristics common to functional and protective biosafety regulatory systems. It also assesses how those systems take into account the major international legal obligations that relate to biosafety, such the Cartagena Biosafety Protocol. The paper identifies certain areas in each country’s biosafety regulatory systems where further development and clarification would improve the biosafety system, making it more functional and protective. Those areas include: (1) the addition of procedures to ensure the food safety of genetically engineered organisms; (2) the inclusion of the standard and criteria for making an approval decision;...

Genome features of Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni BJMBR
Nascimento,A.L.T.O.; Verjovski-Almeida,S.; Van Sluys,M.A.; Monteiro-Vitorello,C.B.; Camargo,L.E.A.; Digiampietri,L.A.; Harstkeerl,R.A.; Ho,P.L.; Marques,M.V.; Oliveira,M.C.; Setubal,J.C.; Haake,D.A.; Martins,E.A.L..
We report novel features of the genome sequence of Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni, a highly invasive spirochete. Leptospira species colonize a significant proportion of rodent populations worldwide and produce life-threatening infections in mammals. Genomic sequence analysis reveals the presence of a competent transport system with 13 families of genes encoding for major transporters including a three-member component efflux system compatible with the long-term survival of this organism. The leptospiral genome contains a broad array of genes encoding regulatory system, signal transduction and methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins, reflecting the organism's ability to respond to diverse environmental stimuli. The identification of a complete set...

Incorporating Collateral Information Using an Adaptive Management Framework for the Regulation of Transgenic Crops AgEcon
Linacre, Nicholas A.; Burgman, Mark A.; Ades, Peter K.; Stewart-Oaten, Allen.
A lack of data often makes biological management decisions difficult and has been an area of contention in the debate over the approval of transgenic crops. Our knowledge of natural systems is limited and our ability to gain additional information, quickly and effectively, is often handicapped by statistical complexity. To adequately cope with this requires new approaches and models that integrate decision-making and management. This paper describes one possible approach to the integration of decision-making and management, which may have application for the regulatory approval of transgenic crops. In many situations countries wishing to approve transgenic crops will have limited data on the environmental performance of the crop. The approach outlined in...
